How to find time to build a blog

The biggest problem I’ve had since I started working on this blog is finding time to sit down and start. It’s a constant struggle for every post, for every plugin or improvement I want to make.

Having three very young kids and a full time job, I had thought I had a convenient excuse that also explained why my previous attempts at internet marketing had gotten me nowhere: I didn’t have enough time.

But I knew I couldn’t –I shouldn’t– settle for that. After I decided to enroll in Alex Jeffreys’ coaching program, I knew I had to make up my mind and work around my kids and job. I had to put at least an hour a day aside to work on my blog, without excuses.

I’ve found that it is in the night hours that I can find that time I need to build my business. It’s not as much as I would want, but that’s what I have. What’s important is that I am now working with a different mindset.

I should not let three more years go by just to see myself in the same spot I was six years ago!

    Jose,

Yep, finding time is always a difficult thing.

But, I figure skip alot of stuff I can do when I have over a million in my bank account.

When will that be… no telling.

    Anyways, I feel for you.

    Cheers,

    Rob

    Well said, Jose!

I’ve let enough time slip me by too, signing up to Alex and his coaching was one of the best decisions I ever made, and that’s a fact.

As for working at night, I seem to have some of my best idea at night, and seem to get more done than in the day for some reason?

Also I see you have the same theme as me, how did you get those 2 boxes on the top right hand side to NOT show recent posts & comments? I can’t figure it out, so I disabled them.

maybe you could try and explain it for me?

Keep up the good work with this blog, and I’ll be back soon.

      Hi Paul,
I also think enrolling with Alex has been a great thing to do.
Regarding how not having Recent Posts and Recent Comments in the top sidebar, I think I just dragged the widgets out of there (in the dashboard, Appearance – Widgets), to the right.
I’ll PM you an image of my Widgets window, hope it helps you.

    Hi Jose,

I know how you feel and I’m without a regular job at the moment. My wife’s managed to get work so I’ve wapped roles and have to take the kids to school, cook and clean.

But I want this to happen ….. stick with the plan and we’ll get there.

    Speak soon,
    John

      John,
      Thanks for stopping by.
Hey, I commend you for taking up the house job. It is a JOB! I realize it whenever I try it on the weekends.

      Straight to your blog, man!

    Hi Jose,

I just read your email regarding the sidebar widgets, it was a big help. I’ll have a play around with it later on.

    Thanks for that, Jose.

    Take care,

    Paul.

    Hi Jose,

Nice clean site and easy to navigate.

I agree it takes time, but your right on track with setting time aside and eliminating the distractions. The wee hours of the night work the best for me as well. Just taking action and sticking to the plan you find the momentum build before you realize it :-)

    Falling forward with you!

Julie, thanks a lot for stopping by!

The wee hours it has to be, indeed.
I’ve concentrated lately on visiting and posting in forums outside our community, I need to start seeing “foreign” visitors to my place. How are you doing yourself?

    Best regards,
    Jose

  8. Karen Kalata says:

    Hi Jose,

I’m glad that I am not the only one that feels this way. I have about four hours in the early morning to work on my blog. I feel I need at least that much time, just to learn, work on generating traffic and write blog posts. Then I leave for work.

I might start to work on it at night, though. After work, that’s actually a good idea. Just to get in a few hours each evening, because I agree. I don’t want to be in the same position I was a year from now :)

You’re blog is coming along wonderfully,
    Talk soon,
    Karen

Thank you for the visit, Mike!

I think I am now more inclined to state that my strongest constraint is my approach… I mean, I can argue that I do not have enough time but, what about the way I use the time that I have? It is little time but I should be using it more effectively.

      See you at your blog!

    Hi Jose,

Good post and I think at least for me you hit the nail on the head with your last comment here.

It holds true for me that the more time I have the more of it I tend to waste.

I mean I do things that are useful but not the most useful ones that I should be focusing on.

But as long as we are aware and keep on improving we’ll get there.

I too get easily distracted or do things that are not relevant. We fight a constant struggle… against ourselves!

  11. Jason Ser says:

    Hi Jose,

Thought of popping by to check out your blog. This post
    caught my attention though.

Believe me, I know exactly what you are trying say here.

I do not have any kids but my day job is very very taxing in
a sense that my boss love to see his staff working like a dog
for long hours, not to mention, how he like to make a miilion
different changes in his work request from us which caused
so many of his employee suffering from ADD.

I often came home emotionally and mentally beaten up!

The salary may look slightly better than most other in the
industries, but is actually not as I had spend a big chunk
of it with medical bills. There are quite a few colleagues
who are like me, struggling with all kind of health issues.

I found it extremely challenging to maintain the balance
between fulfilling my taxing day job, daily obligations, my
health and my internet venture. But I also know that if I
don’t do anything about it, is a dead end anyway.

    Let’s encourage each other!

    WE MUST MAKE THIS WORK!!!

    Cheers

    Jason Ser

    • Jose Perez says:

Good to have you here, Jason! I myself come from your blog, actually.

It’s funny how we put a price on misery… and then we really go all the way to take it!
What’s paradoxical is that with all the tools and techniques currently available, we’re still working the long hours.

Yes, we must make this work. We have to realize, though, that it might take us longer if at the same time we want to keep our jobs because demanding jobs will always require full time.

      Regards,
      Jose
