I recently read a post in Mike Helton’s blog on a common, yet dreadful, subject: Why most internet marketers fail.
In his likable style, Mike gets to the point where he presents us with that infamous equation:
No list = No list marketing = No money
For a moment I thought the only thing I could get out of this obvious truth was that it was the logical explanation for my lack of online income, since “I don’t have a list”. But then something snapped and made me give the equation another twist: neglecting your list just because it is “too small” also equals to No money.
One should not shy away from email marketing efforts just because the members of one’s list can be counted with the fingers in one hand!
I myself have been guilty of that, I realized. Why wait until my list reaches 100 or 1000, to build a relationship with the persons (or just one person, maybe) in it? That is what I have to learn… then just learn with that!

Hey Jose,
Great post, I was the same as you and kinda waiting until the numbers on my latest mailing list grows.
But I shall follow your lead, and start building my relationships now, rather than later.
The longer you leave it the more chance of an unresponsive and cold list, Sally

Hi Sally,
It’s strange how we get to consider waiting an “activity” when at the same time we claim to be very busy.
Great you stopped by,
Jose
It’s true that when we see something so small we give it no credibility but when it grows we look at it in a different way.
Human nature I suppose.
I too will look after my list when I get one that is.
Gert
Hi there, Gert!
Yep, it could be human nature. Hopefully readers of this post start building the relationship from subscriber #1 and won’t have to play catch up.
Been to your blog, great job!
Jose
Hi Jose,
Thanks for that post. I think that regardless of the size of ones list it is so easy to neglect it.
I think that even the top marketers aren’t that good at keeping the relationship going if they indeed do build one.
As for me I keep thinking that what I have to say right now isn’t as good as it could be which makes me put it off for another week.
The only way to get out of this rut is to go to AWeber and write a good broadcast email.
Talk soon,
Vance

Hey Vance, welcome back!
I also thought I didn’t have anything good to say to my listie… and I’m probably right, but I decided that maybe saying something good could be learned. So I started a series of messages based on a review of an ebook. You can imagine where I got the idea!
Great to see you over here again,
Jose
Hi Jose
I believe the relationship with your customer is the key point to determine how much money you could make. Imagine, there is only one person on your list, but you have very close business relationship with this only one customer. One day you send an sale offer promoting something that will earn you 1000. Because of the relationship, the only one subscriber will buy from you.
That is much stronger than you have 1000 people on your list but all they want is free stuff, and they do not trust and look up to you.
Anyway, build up the trust and relationship with your list. They will become profitable.
Hi Kin,
It’s easy to think it’s the number of subscribers that matters, when the real way to profits is in the relationship, as you state in your last post.
Than you for the great comment!
Jose
