Prepare to track keywords when buying traffic

Have you heard/read about Pay-Per-View, Pay-Per-Click or Cost-Per-View? All of these terms define the technique of attracting traffic to our sites by paying for that traffic. The most common method is through Google AdWords, where we can create ads containing text based on carefully researched keywords.

Although our ads can come out in the first search results page solely because of a sound keyword research, everytime a viewer clicks on our ads we would be paying money. Hence we have to make the best use of those clicks we get on our ads. And we wouldn’t be doing so if we are sending them straight to our blogs…

Instead, we’d be better off by sending them to a squeeze page. The reason is simple: a squeeze page is a single-goal page where the probability of conversion is much higher than that of our blogs. In our blogs there will be a lot to see and read and visitors could forget or get distracted from what they came in for in the first place.

Even in the case that we’re using blog hopping, forum posting, or the above mentioned paid methods of advertising, we should direct traffic to our squeeze pages… and capture the leads!

Buying traffic is risking money, so if we get into it we have to be prepared to carefully track what keywords make us money and which ones don’t. That way we would be able to fine tune our efforts. As with everything else, the tracking can be done more effectively using the right tools. One that is most often recommended is StatsJunky.

Keyword research and tracking are two skills we would need to develop that we might have not been keenly aware of when we started blogging. There is more than just setting up a blog on WordPress or Blogger and wait for the visitors to come… and then just go.

    Hi Jose,

    I finally got here!

I have a week to go to visit another 75 more blogs! Oops on that one! :P

I completely agree with you on the 2 skills that we should be taught regarding our blogs, keyword research and tracking. I didn’t even understand the concept of those 2 until a year into my blogging. I had no idea what tagging meant either!

Had better get back to my blog hopping.

I hope all is going well. See you back here soon!

    Cheers

    Hi Jose,

First of all, I would like to say you have a very nice looking blog! It looks as if you have been through Alex’s training, which I here is very good.

I have not dabbled with payed traffic yet, but I am sure that day will arrive soon. You have given great advice here by making sure people track what they are doing with keywords. If you don’t, I am sure you can pay a steep price!

    Thank you,

    Mark

    • Jose Perez says:

      Thank you, Mark.

I just changed the look of the blog (changed the theme, actually), trying to fix a footer problem I’ve had…

Even if we’re not paying for traffic, tracking is most useful and necessary.

Hi Jose, great website and a most excellent article! One of the recurring themes that stands out among all of the challenge articles is list building. “Always be building your list” is a quote I remember often. There’s also the other side of that command which is “always keep your list in the loop”. When we learn to stay engaged with our subscribers they’ll become more interested and responsive. I only open every email from very few marketers. I mean the ones who are consistently sharing original content and promotional review specials that are worth checking out. Take care, Steve D.

p.s. StatsJunky looks like an awesome affiliate network. Are you a member?

    Hi Jose,
I agree. It is important to track keywords when buying traffic. Buing traffic can get very expensive. Therefore, knowing which words brought your traffic in the first place is instrumental. I’m sure you are already aware but in case you aren’t, mobile marketing is an awesome way to generate traffic as well. Squeeze pages can also be done which I think is very cool. Thank you for the post!

    Hi Jose

Great post & like the site too.

I no longer use Google Adwords I use Clickbank Rotator on my blog site instead. I ran with Google for a while but it generated a few £’s. Not really impressed with it to be honest. The jury is still out on Clickbank Rotator.

I do like the squeeze page comments though. Something I need to really look into more.

I do not know if I will ever pay for traffic again. I lost too much money following a system that I paid for. I am trying to focus on organic traffic now.

    Hi Jose,

I agree setting up a squeeze page through which you can build your list is a better way to track your campaigns. Not only that, you’re giving yourself more opportunity to communicate with interested buyers on products through which they opted in to hear about in the first place. Overall, if you’re wasting money on the table, better that it’s to find a way to engage yourself with your customers. While tracking keywords can be a bit time-consuming, automated software like StatsJunky, you’ve mentioned helps with all the hard work and let’s you do more. Thanks for sharing this!

    Hi Jose

Keyword research or SEO is indeed very important when buying traffic. This would ensure that the capital invested in Adwords can yield good results. SEO in itself requires a special skill set, as much time and efforts need to be put in for keyword research, to study competition etc. What helps is to target on niche keywords, which are less competitive, but yet has good market demand.

Such great information about keywords and traffic and tracking. I remember back in the day we could get X number of visitors on eBay! 10,000, 100,000 – however many. But….so what? It didnt help much as far as sales. But a snazzy squeeze page that captures the attention of just a few is very useful! We need to sell the squeeze page!!! LOL

    Hello Jose

very informative and educational post. I would dare to say that you need to track everything, either you’re using paid traffic or free traffic. Even with organic, you may using the wrong set of keywords, but you’ll never know if you don’t track.

Very interesting your advice for the squeeze pages. I certainly need to take a look at my blogs.

  17. Michael Pedzotti from software tools for bloggers says:

Jose, blogs do tend have a lot of tinsel around the edges that distracts visitors from some of the money making schemes lurking behind ads and images. I guess one approach would be to weave the money-making schemes into the tinsel or fabric of the blog. One quick way I have found to do that is by tying selected keywords to affiliate links so that whenever those keywords appear in a post or comment the affiliate link is added automatically when the page is built.

Very sound advice, and something that I did not understand until reading this. So many including me start with the product but keyword reaserch is so important, it’s no good having a great product that no one is interested in, I must admit the keyword and tracking side of things did not appeal to me. I can see now that it is an important and very interesting part of the business. The advice on squeeze pages is great as well. I am greatful for the help.

    Hi Jose

Tracking is one of the most boring parts of online marketing but also one of the most important, especially for things such as PPC where money is involved.

I’ve only been using free traffic generation methods so far but I like to keep track of where the traffic is coming from to see what is working and what isn’t. There aren’t enough hours in the day so we need to do what we can to make sure we are spending the time we have doing the things that get the best results.

Jose, I’ve got to work a squeeze page into my blog, or something to get signups. I will have to see what’s available. I used PPC when I received the free Adwords coupons, but have never really seen much success so usually end the campaigns before I put my real money in it.

    Hi Jose

I would never pay for online traffic, I have been down the advertising road in offline businesses and thrown away a fortune in trying to attract customers, with limited success.

Yes, it is one thing building a list and another looking after it. Traffic is no longer an issue for me, but it did take me a while to realise that my list needs looking after. I used to leave far too long between emails and I think that in this information overload world, people just forget who you are if you do that.

    Hi Jose,

Have you bought any traffic yet? Keyword research is so important and yet so few people are doing it, it seems.

Wouldn’t s be nice to just buy traffic a miraculously have people buying left and right?

Even getting free traffic requires doing significant keyword research if not more. But of course any mistakes made there don’t come directly out of your pocket.
