Prepare to track keywords when buying traffic

Have you heard/read about Pay-Per-View, Pay-Per-Click or Cost-Per-View? All of these terms define the technique of attracting traffic to our sites by paying for that traffic. The most common method is through Google AdWords, where we can create ads containing text based on carefully researched keywords.

Although our ads can come out in the first search results page solely because of a sound keyword research, everytime a viewer clicks on our ads we would be paying money. Hence we have to make the best use of those clicks we get on our ads. And we wouldn’t be doing so if we are sending them straight to our blogs…

Instead, we’d be better off by sending them to a squeeze page. The reason is simple: a squeeze page is a single-goal page where the probability of conversion is much higher than that of our blogs. In our blogs there will be a lot to see and read and visitors could forget or get distracted from what they came in for in the first place.

Even in the case that we’re using blog hopping, forum posting, or the above mentioned paid methods of advertising, we should direct traffic to our squeeze pages… and capture the leads!

Buying traffic is risking money, so if we get into it we have to be prepared to carefully track what keywords make us money and which ones don’t. That way we would be able to fine tune our efforts. As with everything else, the tracking can be done more effectively using the right tools. One that is most often recommended is StatsJunky.

Keyword research and tracking are two skills we would need to develop that we might have not been keenly aware of when we started blogging. There is more than just setting up a blog on WordPress or Blogger and wait for the visitors to come… and then just go.

    Hey Jose,

I have only ever dipped my toes into buying traffic once, and it was not that great to be honest but…

I really didn’t know what I was doing, so I would not rule out trying it again, if I had more knowledge.

Like you said people just expect the traffic to come, then they are surprised when it doesn’t which makes me laugh.

Nice post, catch you soon, Sally :)

      Hi Sally,

When it comes to putting our money at stakes, we better be prepared. And blogging, even though host and domain name registration fees can be, well, easily affordable, actually mean risking money (of course, when doing it for business purposes).

I had pushed that notion aside but I thought I shouldn’t any longer, hence this post. Thinking aloud (?), I was.

      Great having you here again.

I agree that it is essential to send ppc viewers to a squeeze page. It is the only way to at least have a hope of selling something to make the money back.

    Hey Jose
Great post! I have had my fair share of pain in purchasing traffic, one vendor promised to get me to number one on google. Once he got hold of my money that was the end of it $2,500 down the drain what a rip off! I guess I was foolish for trusting the sales guy.
In your post you describe the process nicely and this gives me a good understanding of how things work. The squeeze page is a good way to maximise the money spent. Thank you.

I too agree – if you’re going to spend hard earned cash on sending people to a site… It would be better to capture their email and have the ability to market to them again without increasing your costs…

And the point about tracking where the money is spent and what is working is essential when spending – or we could be throwing good money after bad!

    Jose,

I have bought traffic for one of my products and I agree that it is important to track conversions and which keywords/ads are converting well. The sales income was greater than the cost of the traffic (always a good thing) so it was a successful exercise for me. I still have a lot to learn but actually doing it is one of the best ways to learn.

  7. Hello My Friend,

Is been a while. The moment I saw your link on ” Jacinta’s Event” I pop right in. :)

PPC traffic is really part art and part science. In the old times, when the OTO and backend sell system is not as advanced as the present time, whether to send PPC traffic into a single sales page /squeeze page or instead to a content site is an argument with no straight answers.

On one hand the argument made its stand of what you wrote here, a better chance to capture their details and sell them for your ROI. On the other hand, some argue that search engine visitors are more on a “research mentality”, looking for info rather than buying stuff, and that they will click and closed the windows as soon as they saw a sales pitch of some kind.

What I really feel though, it really depend on the kind of market you are in and most important of all, the relevancy and value of the content either in your single sales page/squeeze page or your content site provide.

Well, as the saying goes.. a thousand monks, a thousands religions. Research and Planning before hand, and testing on the go is still the best way to provide a more accurate answer.

    What do you think?

    Cheers
    Jason Ser

    • Jose Perez says:

      Hi there, Jason!

I think capturing the lead is still the way to go. But as one gets more knowledgeable of the market, other aspects might come higher up in the priorities list, and hopefully we would be able to recognize that.

If you are going to do that then I think you are preparing yourself now which is great.

        • Vance from Can Mac Be PC says:

Just to let you know that I had managed to have my CL function fixed by logging into the CL site and unbanning my blog.

If this happens to your CL as it seems to be happening to a lot of bloggers I visit just click on the CL icon or near it and a drop down menu should open.

Find the URL that says unban in the last part of it and all you have to do once it takes you to that site is fill in your blog URL and press a button.

It took me a while to figure this out so I thought I’d share it with you to save you and your readers some time should it happen to you.

    Hi Jose

Good tips for anyone considering paying for traffic. I agree with you that it’s best to be fully prepared before you jump in or you could lose a lot of money fairly easily and pretty quickly.

Tracking your stats is an essential part of making a profit, as is split testing your ads and making sure you get the maximum return possible.

It’s also worth noting that it’s not just Google that offers the chance to buy traffic…check out facebook or youtube, maybe bing, for more competitive rates and returns.

I have only just created a squeeze page, and I’m not ready to spend money on traffic yet. But I have no objection to this, as long as the amount spent on traffic is less than the profit you make from sales. Hi Jose,

I have tried Pay Per Click once and did lose a little money. I was not really knowledgeable on the subject. We also need to track keywords for any type of advertising whether it be paid or free. So we know what keywords are working and what are not. Then we can devote our time on the keywords that are bringing in the traffic.

For free advertising Ezine Articles is good and they also send you a free months report on what keywords people used to reach your articles. Which is a great idea.

Marketers or any business have to accept that there is no guarantee from advertising. It is about testing and finding what is working then stick with it.

Will stick with free advertising for now Jose.

  33. Sally says:

    Hi Jose,

Yes, sending your traffic to your squeeze page is very important. You want to build your list not someone else’s.

So, tracking and testing is paramount when paying for traffic, especially with PPC on Google’s Display (formally known as Content) network.

If we are talking about paid traffic here, I’ve had some pretty good results with image ads on the display (content) network. The costs are a fraction of the Googles Search network PPC. However, you are still help hostage to the Google whims and your campaign can just dry up for no apparent reason.

Definitely wise to have multiple traffic venues in your marketing plan so that if your campaign dries up you still have other legs bringing in traffic.

The other thing that I’ve had some good results with is Leadimpact. But again, you must be careful as it can drain your money fast if not set up properly.

If you do your due diligence and set up the right set of keywords, both of these methods can deliver consistent, steady traffic. I like them because once you set up a successful campaign that you’ve tested, you don’t have to do anything but monitor it. The traffic just comes in.

Hope this post wasn’t too long

    Hi Jose,

I agree 100% with you. If you read my blog you will see that I am sharing different affiliate marketing mistakes. On my latest blog post I am sharing the BIGGEST mistake which is not building a list. Sending visitors to a squeeze page you will be able to build a list of people that are interested in something. None buys something on the first visit.

Pay Per Click advertising is one of the quickest ways to drive traffic to your squeeze page.
Unfortunately Big G! “punishes” this kind of websites and it is getting harder every day!

One of the alternative ways to build your list now through PPC advertising is Facebook.

Of course if you are doing PPC advertising (no matter where) tracking your keywords is required. By knowing which keywords are giving you the most subscribers and making you the most sales you will be able to spend more money and grow your business quicker.

    Take care,
    Andreas

  44. Hi Jose, you’re right keeping visitors focused so they don’t get distracted. Ideally, the keywords chosen for PPC, etc. are long tail and buy-ready. Since the visitor is already in buy-mode, you’re doing them a service by keeping them focused and directing them straight to a squeeze page. Keep the momentum going!

Every page, whether it be a blog post or a squeeze page, needs to have a call to action so the viewer knows what to do. Otherwise, they’re likely to get bored and leave the site.

As an example… I’ve read your post and I’m not sure what to do next. What is your goal for readers when they arrive on your blog? Do you want us to leave comments, sign up for your list, click to a squeeze page or an affiliate link, etc?

You can give your individual blog posts so much power by always ending with a summary and a call to action. They may not convert like a squeeze page, but blog posts can bring you lots of benefits.

An interesting point you make here. All too often people go into paid advertising with their eyes only half open believing that it will earn them a fortune with no work. The point being that you are then at the mercy of the ability of the individual website and the quality (or not) of its sales copy.
By sending traffic to a squeeze page you are building your own asset (your list) which you can then market to on an on-going basis and therefore increasing your long term ROI. Additionally it means that you leverage the traffic you pay for as a pose to solely the product vendor (if they buy then he/she captures their details and markets to them moving forward often without further commission for you).
It is interesting to see recent reports (Ryan Deiss Perpetual Traffic Formula) which show that people are becoming oblivious to paid ads in the search engines (much like “banner blindness” of a few years ago) and therefore it is as important to use organic SEO.
As you rightly say, the key with either method is to track and optimise, something which we will all learn to do better as we progress. Speak soon,

    Hi Jose,

We are so fortunate in internet marketing to have a way to track our paid advertising.

Compare this to offline businesses and the ways in which companies don’t even bother to track the success or otherwise of an advert in the paper or trade journal.

Over the last 10 years I have seen the joys of easy advertising on Goto.com to the advanced opportunities offered by Google Adwords and all the time the number one goal has been to track every single cent spent.

I believe if you don’t track you aren’t running a proper business because how can you be sure your advertsing is profitable and predict future cashflow.

Sorry to be harsh but I see IMers make successful strides forward when they get serious about their tracking.

    All the best.

    Kind Regards

    Hi Jose,

I have not paid for any traffic with my strategies yet, but I agree it must be better to direct it to your squeeze page.

We must keep building that list of prospects to make the most of our business activities online.

    Hey Jose,

Sound advice sending traffic, especially paid traffic, to a squeeze page…instead of the blog.

Also, your advice to do heavy keyword research and analyze the results is also very good.

Thanks for such a content rich post. I enjoyed it.
